BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL CARE

Lytton Street offers a BAASC (Before and After School Care) Programme.
Hours: 7.30 - 8.30am and 3.00 - 5.30pm daily, during term time.
We now have our OSCAR subsidy approval. Please contact the office for more information. (323 6687).

KICK START TO SCHOOL PROGRAMME

Lytton Steet School offers a "Kick-start-to-School" Programme for those children who are enrolled to attend this school and will be turning 5 years old this year, and a parent or caregiver who must attend with them. This is a once-a-week class and ideally children should have 8 - 10 sessions, prior to starting school. Please contact the school office for information and enrolment form.

Special Learning Programmes: Within our school we are able to supply special help for children who are identified in our monitoring programme. These special help programmes include:
Reading Recovery: One-to-one tuition in Reading at age 6.
• Resource Teacher of Literacy: One-to-one or very small group tuition to children struggling to achieve in reading in the Senior school.
• Special Needs Programmes: Small groups children with similar needs are brought together for a specific purpose and time. These groups change to meet different needs.
• Support Teacher: Liaises with teachers and parents where a child needs special support. In these cases, a support group is usually formed to provide on-going special help and programming
• Extension Programme: Provides an accelerated programme for children with special needs.

School Behaviour Management Programme: We have developed a behaviour management strategy based on behaviour modification techniques. We expect our children to act in a caring and responsible way at all times. If we have applied the different steps in this strategy and there is still inappropriate behaviour, we will invite you to become part of the child’s support team.

Regular Reporting: We will report on your child’s progress in the following ways:
a) Team and/or class parent-teacher meeting at the beginning of the school year (several nights, week 3 or 4).
b) Request interviews at any time.
c) Formal interview (oral report) mid year, in depth
d) Informal Meetings, as required.
e) End-of-year written report for all children
f) Week 8 report for new 5 year olds. Parents are reminded that the first point of contact with any queries/concerns regarding their child is with the class teacher. It sometimes can be difficult to directly contact a staff member, so please leave your name, contact number and message at the office.

WE LOOK AFTER YOUR CHILD’S HEALTH AND SAFETY

Road Safety: Children's safety is of vital importance. Wardens are on duty at the following times:
Kimbolton Road from 8.20am to 8.40am and from 2.50pm to 3.10pm
North & Lytton Streets from 2.50pm to 3.10pm
During these times the traffic wardens are supervised by a duty teacher. Please encourage your children to use these crossings. Double parking is illegal. Please try to avoid double parking outside the school as it may put smaller children at risk.
Health Facilities: If you require it, we can request assistance from the Public Health Nurse for your child. Vision and hearing tests are carried out at regular intervals and on requests by ringing 355 0743. A health sheet is filled out on your child’s details at enrolment.
Dental Facilities: The dental clinic official hours are from 8.30am to 4.15pm, except for some dates when the clinic may close earlier at 3.35pm. If you would like urgent dental assistance, please contact the clinic before 3.45pm. The clinic is closed during school holidays. The Dental Clinic phone number is 323 6686.
Religious Education: This is available for children in Year 3 and 4 classes on Wednesdays 8.50-9.25am. For those not wishing their children to attend, please provide written instructions.
Swimming: During the summer months, regular swimming lessons are taken for all classes, at the Makino Aquatic Complex. This is paid for by the Board of Trustees. Swimming is part of the School Curriculum and all children must participate unless medically unfit. We require a note from you if your child is unable to take part in swimming.
Playground: To provide a safe and secure environment, no contact sports/games are played in our playground. Lytton Street School is a “Cool School” running a Peer Mediation programme in the Playground. Our school is also committed to safe suncare including encouragement of wearing hats, sitting under shade etc.

WE OFFER ADDITIONAL RETAIL SERVICES
Stationery: Retail-priced stationery is available from our office each day. If we require your child to have stationery, the teacher will give your child a note. We will provide discount stationery at the start of the school year. We make up packs for New Entrants to make it easier for parents to purchase the correct stationery.

Banking: (ANZ/POST BANK) Children are able to bank at school on Tuesdays. Bring bank book and completed forms etc to the office.

DEVELOPING A PARTNERSHIP
We appreciate your help: We appreciate the generous support provided by you, our parents and caregivers. At the beginning of each year and occasionally through our newsletter, we appeal for helpers to assist with: library maintenance: mechanical work: sports coaching; art and craft; transport for class and sports trips; working bees; receipting activity money; carpentry; chaperoning; fundraising committees; making teaching equipment and classroom helping eg, remedial reading, swimming, sewing. We would appreciate your help with any of these activities. If you are interested in helping, please call in or phone our office.
We value your input in our Charter: The Board of Trustees has the responsibility of reviewing and updating our Charter and Policies. From time to time we may ask you to contribute to this development through formulating or commenting on a policy. We invite you to participate fully in this process, as we value your feedback on our school.
Attitudes are Important: Lytton Street School has a proud record of developing and caring for its students. You have an important part to play in this partnership. Please work with us to achieve the best possible outcomes for all children
.

Together, we will live to learn and learn to live.

10 Ways to Help your Children Succeed:

  1. Talk with your children – talk early and often, provide them with information, feedback, a sympathetic ear, good advice based on family values, support rather than criticism. They will come to you throughout their lives for guidance if their early experiences are positive.
  2. Set high but realist expectations . No one knows better than you your children's true abilities. Note their strengths and talents and gently encourage them. Assist them in setting realistic self-expectations.
  3. Build your children's sense of self-worth . As children grow and make choices they will make mistakes. Knowing they have your unconditional love and support whatever happens will help them pick themselves up and start again when things do go wrong.
  4. Keep your children healthy . Children who do well at school come to class rested, well-fed and emotionally prepared. Children who are well-nourished in every respect have the foundation for success.
  5. Support learning at school . Involvement in your child's learning starts at home. Create the conditions for good learning – books, computer, quiet study area, library membership, time set aside for homework, interest in progress and reports.
  6. Communicate with the school. Teachers who never hear from Parents often assume they are not interested. Attend meetings. Read notices and newsletters. Offer help. Join the PTA. Send polite notes to your children's teachers.
  7. Encourage a spirit of inquiry . Show your children what a wonderful place the world is. Visit parks, museums, art galleries. There's plenty of free entertainment and exploration available. Curiosity about the world around them is the first step to children's thirst for knowledge.
  8. Build friendships . Children want to fit in and feel they belong. Welcome their friends to your home. Show your children how to be good friends. Teach them the difference between true friendship and popularity.
  9. Keep your children safe . Identify risks and hazards and show your children how to avoid them. Children develop a sense of security when they are taught what to do if they are in danger.
  10. Speak well of teachers and schools . Children learn their attitudes from you and will like and respect their teachers if they see you do the same.
